Parent Education Requirements in Milwaukee, WI
MILWAUKEE COUNTY RESIDENTS
If your divorce is taking place in the Milwaukee County Circuit Court, both you and your spouse are required to complete an approved parent education program of at least four hours in length regarding the effect of a divorce action on your children. Participation is mandatory, and you will not be able to be divorced in Milwaukee County unless evidence of completion of such a class is on file with the Family Court. This is true even if you and your spouse do not have any disputed issues regarding the children. Please provide us with a copy of the attendance report form that you will receive when you attend this session.
If you participate in a Collaborative Divorce, your work with the Child Specialist may meet this requirement. The Child Specialist will be required to complete the form confirming your parent education work.

“CHILDREN COPE WITH DIVORCE”
This program consists of two sessions of 2 hours each, or one 4-hour session. The program is directed at parents. It focuses specifically on the needs of children during the stressful time of a divorce. The program is presented for parents only by professionals specifically trained in using this program. Child care is not provided, and children are not allowed to attend. Participants can select the time and location of the program they wish to attend. And, while most couples attend the same program, a participant can ask to attend a program when his or her spouse will not be present. BEYOND DIVORCE
Beyond Divorce is an educational program for families in divorce situations.
The course helps parents cope more effectively with the problems that often result from divorce, teaches them how to help their children cope during the stressful transition, and provides advice on how to co-parent so that everyone in the family can maintain healthy relationships.
How the program works:
Online programs are not an option in Ozaukee County. Certification by a Child Specialist in a Collaborative Divorce may qualify; however, we must ask for approval in advance of any final hearing.
WAUKESHA COUNTY RESIDENTS:
HELPING CHILDREN COPE WITH DIVORCE SEMINAR
This seminar is required by statute for both parties to attend before a divorce or legal separation may be granted. It is designed to educate parents about the special needs of their children during a separation or divorce. Topics include:
A brochure explaining the program, fees, and registration information is mailed to the parties from the court with the Notice of Pre-Trial Conference. Also, the brochure is available on-line. - Each person attending must call 262-376-7774 to register for the course.
- Beyond Divorce fulfills the court requirement of four hours of co-parenting education.
- The $75 program fee must be paid prior to attending the class.
